Server Consolidation

IT consolidation or centralization is a natural option for many organizations. Following acquisitions, some enterprises are facing multiple coexisting IT systems with servers located in different buildings, cities and countries. Because of constrained WAN resources, other organizations simply chose to use a distributed IT infrastructure, where users locally access applications, rather than using the WAN and central datacenters to do so. The cost of a diverse, distributed IT infrastructure is dramatic in terms of hardware and software, maintenance, data security and backup.

Can anyone recommend software that will act as a network attached storage device?

I want to put NAS on my home network but already have two good desktop machines that could be used. Is there software out there that will allow me to use a desktop as a dedicated NAS box rather than have to buy a NAS box and spend yet more money?!

If the machine already has windows on it simply SHARE the drive on the network and give full control.

Remember though that a PC will use a LOT more electricity to run than a NAS would, so factor in that cost ofer 2 years and the NAS might be a cheaper option

Is there any way to turn an ADSL router into storage?

I have a Westell 2200 from Verizon (Which they allowed me to keep after I ended service with them.) I was wondering if anyone knew any way I could turn it into a small USB storage.
It has an OS on it, leading me to believe that there is some small storage capacity in it.

No. It’s just a modem. It doesn’t have the capability of doing any storage.

Whats Wrong With My Wireless?

ok, i have just installed windows vista on my laptop (my other laptop) its the same vista that was already on it, i was rebooting it to get rid of all my data and viruses….it started up and installed without complaint and i knew there would be some drivers for me to install, which is not a problem for a P.C tech head like me lol. but what i don’t understand is that my wireless does not show any networks and when i ask it why it brings up a little box saying something about hardware and drivers BLAH! so i thought i needed a driver for the wireless hardware (which is inter grated I THINK) i have never opened the la top. anyway i opened the manager and what did i find? Absolutely nothing about the wireless…its as if the computer refuses to belive i have wireless :S i have the details here from a program called everest:

I have tried ALL availible drivers, plus dragging my own driver from a near exact same laptop that uses the same wireless thing.

ANY help would be glady appreasiated and of course the most helpfull will get the points for best answer :)
Thx in advance
TIve checked the button on the front, the light is on, indicating its turned on, but the machine will not recognise it, it worked perfectly before, re installed windows, nothing to show the installation was bad.
The wireless card was installed with the laptop, all stock parts here:D Ive checked the button on the front, the light is on, indicating its turned on, but the machine will not recognise it, it worked perfectly before, re installed windows, nothing to show the installation was bad. what could cause this?

By looking at the network adapters list there is no wireless listed at all…. Is the RADIO CARD turned on?

Toshiba and other laptops do have a switch to enable and disable the radio cards, if that is off, you won’t even see the card in the Device Manager. You don’t so that is my "best guess"
Once the card shows up in the device manager, THEN you can add the driver! Until that card shows in the device manager, your operating system can’t add it!
