http://go.tagjag.com/drobo – What device do you use for NAS (if anything)? I’ve only heard of the Drobo before, but I’ve never been sent one to review. Well the guy from http://www.youtube.com/kevoc2008 recorded this particular “interview” at Macworld last week and I thought it would be good to post if only to ask the question: do you NAS or not?

Is it possible to mount a Network Storage Device set alone in splendid isolation WITH a wireless Dongle attached but WITHOUT the encumbarence of a PC attached to it?
I know of devices such as Netgears "Storage Central" unit which HAVE to be cable-connected to a router PC to work and THEN store data from other (wirelessly) connected PC’s.
The Storage Device would then simply be shown as another drive on any PC’s displays of the network. All that would be attached to the Storage Display unit would be the mains supply, and the Dongle.
What attracts me to the idea of a remote Storage Device, wirelessly connected, is that no-one (Such as children) can get their hands on it- or is this a pie in the sky, idea best left with the birds!
(wireless) router and a network storage device. you could then connect the hard drive to one of the device slots on the router, and have a huge cable to the hard drive or have it near the wirless router and have you PC connected wirlessly. i dont know of any other way.

This is a unboxing video of the Netgear NAS device. The hard drive NAS enclosure costs $180 from bestbuy. Over all i have liked this device quite a bit and it has been very easy to handle and set up. Check out my channel for more unboxing videos like this.

Trying to find a Network Attached Storage (NAS) that will allow me to attach the NAS to my home network connected to the internet via Comcast cable modem, and then allow me to map folders on the NAS via remote windows machines (e.g. at work, or from a hotel), so they appear as drive letters on the remote windows machines. It is okay if this also requires DDNS.
You need a router that will let you make a VPN connection to it. Then you can connect to whatever NAS, computer or device you need. Plus side is it is encrypted and under your control. Linksys makes a great on called RV42 or RV042. Search newegg.com for it.
As for the NAS doing it… Why pay extra for something that has limited options.

I want to put NAS on my home network but already have two good desktop machines that could be used. Is there software out there that will allow me to use a desktop as a dedicated NAS box rather than have to buy a NAS box and spend yet more money?!
If the machine already has windows on it simply SHARE the drive on the network and give full control.
Remember though that a PC will use a LOT more electricity to run than a NAS would, so factor in that cost ofer 2 years and the NAS might be a cheaper option

My plan is to buy a large storage device with network connectivity, connect it to one of the lan ports on my wireless router and share the storage between my desktop (which is connected by another one of the lan ports) and my laptop (which connects by WiFi). I also want the two computers to retain their internet access via the router.
Is it as straight forward as it sounds or am I going to have to put a bit more thought into this? Will there be a problem accessing the storage as my laptop uses Vista premium and the desktop uses XP SP2?
Nope. It’s as easy as that. The NAS devices comes loaded with software that lets you assign an IP and it’ll look like a computer on your network. The device should come with all the instructions you need.

the device is a network storage and a external HDD USB 1TB. I have connected the device through Ethernet port to my O2 broadband modem. the device appears in network but it requires a password behind all reason. plus I have already tried to set up the device to work as a FTP server but it does not work:(.
my modem is:O2 wireless box II thomson TG585v7
Is your modem also a router?
~
Make/Model number?
Added; This might be a function of the Modem/router. I looked up the manual on the manufacturer’s site http://www.technostation.com/user-guide-owners-manual/Thomson/THOMSON+TG585v7
It might be protecting the NAS from outside attacks by default. I am not familiar with this device. You might get better support from your ISP or the manufacturer.
