I’m buying some server equipment for a company I work for and I’m having a little trouble understanding the SAN storage. I have to purchase a server, FC switch, some NAS storage etc. which I’ve found just fine but I don’t understand the specs the SAN storage needs. The server is going to be over a FC network. I get the NAS storage but is the SAN storage just like a large external HD that is attached so it apears to be local? I also need a SAN storage controller for the SAN storage. Is this software thats built into the storage hardware? For this application I just need a small amount of SAN storage which is where I’m running into the problem. I can find huge amounts of SAN storage but for now I just need a few TBs. Can anyone explain SAN storage and SAN storage controller and send me in the right direction to find what I need? Thanks

I really don’t understand why people use NAS or SAN when you can use a cluster or two mirrored servers with replication software.

ViceVersa is an excellent program for replication and it’s cheap and easy to use compared to the Norton Backup Exec or other big companies.

For better understanding, call the salesman and setup a webex demo.

This may help:

Hey friends. I have spent a lot of time on google to find the basic certification course for SAN but I didn’t find any clear information. Can anyone please provide the details of the basic level certification on SAN and also some important information like where can I book a slot to write the exam, fees and about the materials. Thank you in advance.

I think the path you want to take is the SNCP, which is Storage Networking Certification Program. You can get SNIA certified in SCSP, which is SNIA Certified Storage Professional.

Here is their website
