I need to rent space in a data center for a 1U server but I’m not sure how much I should be expecting to pay. Can anyone provide some suggestions on getting the best price on a hosting plan in a data center?

it will all depend on how the data center manages your server and bandwidth needs? have you ever thought of hosting the server yourself but pay the cost of the internet business line?

I am not looking for whats easiest, but whats cheapest and most effective.

If your making a home server there are some things you must look at.

1. Does your computer have enough ram? becuase ram is what its all about when running a server.

2. bandwith – do you have enough?

3.cpu speed – its alwasy better to be faster.

bandwith and ram is the main concern when running a server. If you have cable you can run about 7-8 people on that server. dsl can only run about 4-5, if that. What you need is a connection with both high download rates and high upload rates, most providers have super fast download with uber slow upload rates, check with you cable company to see if you can change to a service with a higher upload rate. You will need good ram with decent timing’s, the more ram you have, the better the server will run.

My personal opinion, its easier to rent a server.

Co Located means you have to manage the server and be able to service it etc. You can also usually just lease a server at these offices and they will then keep the hardware running, you still have to manage the system and os etc.

In many cases the "10 M" connection will still have some amount of monthly transfer limitations so shop carefully to meet your exact needs. The price will all depend on monthly data transfers in most cases and not the connected speed.
