I am a newbie in DNS server setup. I have registered more than 100 domain names and now I want to put all of them live. I want to do the DNS hosting by myself rather than using commercial DNS servicem, saying I would like to have DNS servers as:
dns1.mydomain.com
dns2.mydomain.com
Currently "mydomain.com" zone file is hosted in the colocation center’s DNS server.
I have one dedicated Windows 2000 server with many IPs. I want to use this server as dns1, and dns2 with different IP. This server has been setup as a DNS server.
The questions are:
1. how can I setup the dns1.mydomain.com as a reconginzed DNS server? Do I need to register dns1,2.mydomain.com with some agents? if so, where?
2. where I should setup the zone file for dns1.mydomain.com and dns2.mydomain.com–my colocation center DNS server or my own DNS server?
3. After I setup zonefiles for my 100+ domain names and change their name servers in godaddy.com to dns1.mydomain.com, dns2.mydomain.com, I won’t have any problem on that. Is it right?
Any suggestion and instruction are appreciated!
Madhu.
Its not too difficult to setup the DNS, it just sounds like it is.
1. Go to your REGISTRAR and have them Register your name servers. The same registrar that registered the domain name can resgister the DNS names as well. You will need to supply them with the FQDN and the IP’s you wish to use. They have to make the entry into the system
So you have your IP for dns1.yourdomain.com and dns2.yourdomain.com setup by the registrar to the IP’s you give them.
(You can use any names you like… like host.mydomain.com. or even madhu.mydomain.com etc it does not have to be named dns1 and dsn2.) If it were me, I would use a domain registration that is not active but its up to you.
2. The ZONE files ALL GO on the server that is the nameserver.. so you setup the forward zones on your Win2K server for the DNS names you gave in step one. You need A and NS records for the DNS names! If the IP’s have been fully delegated to you (RARE byt the way) then you need to do the Reverse Zones as well! In most cases IP’s are assigned to you but not fully delgated to you from your ISP.. in this case your ISP needs to supply a reverse entry for your DNS servers or at least the prime domain that you are using for the dns servers xxx.THISNAME.com wil need them to enter a reverse address (mainly for email to work without issues) Email servers without reverse addresses are a real bad idea.
3. You shouldn’t have any issues at all with this one since godaddy or whoever your registrar is has also setup the dns ip’s. If you have domains that have .net, biz. org etc you should (notice should) also setup dns names that also end in .net, .biz.org as well!! You can use all the same IP’s for the names but do register names for all domain extensions.
A really helpful site to see if you have it all correct is DNS STUFF
http://dnsstuff.com they have test tools that show you all is correct and done right!

Generally, if you can get a colo in and Equinix facility, you’ll be in a pretty good position.
Equinix is considered by many to be the top colo facility, and has customers on its list such as Yahoo!, Google, EA, Level 3 and the like.
However, it’s probably pretty pricey to get a cage. However, renting rack space from someone already in a cage there is fairly economical.
A quick search on google shows a few places that have cages and will colo some of their rack space. See links below.

I am Looking to buy Linux server online to be shipped to colocation in Atlanta, I need recommendation for the best company to by online.
a "linux server" is nothing more than an IBM compatible PC with Linux running as it’s operating system.
Linux nowadays has drivers for most common hardware on the market, so as long as you stick with industry standard components (ASUS or INTEL motherboards, 3-com or d-link Ethernet, ATI or Matrox video, Creative labs sound card….you get the idea) You’ll be fine. I just suggest you purchase the systems from a store that will pre-load the linux onto the units to your specifications so that if there are any issues, they can be solved before the unit is shipped.
What is the difference between a web host and web server? And a colocation? Details would be appreciated!
A web host is the company that supplies the web server, which is the computer where your website lives.
